Possible Health Benefits
There are a number of reports about health benefits of green tea. The most popular constituent is Catechin which is extracted more in hot water (70 to 80 degrees) and it works immediately after you take tea.
Catechin works well for preventing dental cavities and halitosis (bad breath). If you have cavities, catechin will help balance enzymes in your mouth. It also makes tooth enamel tougher and more resistant to corrosive acid attacks.
Common cold and influenza
Catechin is very effective to prevent and relieve from common cold and influenza. It works as anti-bacterial and sterilises germs and bacteria. It is said that gargling with Japanese green tea can prevent common cold and influenza and help relieve sore throat, cough and nasal congestion.
For maximising the benefit, both gargling and drinking Japanese green tea are recommended.
Prevention from food poisoning
Catechin, especially EGCg (Epigallocatechin gallate) and EGC (Epigallocatechin), has strong anti-bacteria effect and protects us from food-poisoning. When you go to a sushi restaurant in Japan, green tea is generally served. As there was a time that fresh food preservation was difficult, our ancestral wisdom created this service.
